In response to this escalation in Palestinian military activity, the Israeli leadership decided to launch a limited invasion of the Jordan Valley, targeting the Palestinian fighter camps. Jordan was powerless to do anything since its army was still in a weakened condition. Civilian villages and camps were being shelled by the Israelis with the hope that Jordanians would see the Palestinians as the reason for the relentless devastation of their homes, and would thus mobilize against them. It was hard for many of us in the Arab world to believe that we could actually stand up to Israel after our terrible defeat in the Six Days’ War.

By July 1971, the Jordanian army, in what I believe was Jordan’s major move to rid itself forever of the PLO presence in Jordan, launched a devastating attack against Dbein, the area to which we had been allowed to withdraw. Part of those troops and a number of leaders, including Yasser Arafat, were forced to move farther north of Amman, to the Ajlun Mountains, near the historical city of Jerash. Arafat’s locations in particular were heavily shelled. Other PLO leaders, including Dr. George Habash of the PFLP, were forced to move north toward the Syrian border.

During the attack on Al-Hussein Camp, I was fighting in Wahdat Camp, a Palestinian refugee camp south of Amman, near where the hostages were being kept. We remained in contact with all the fronts. The defense of the camps was HIJACKED! • 29 carried out by fighters from the PFLP, Fateh, and armed civilians. A united command of Fateh and PFLP leaders was established in every refugee camp to lead the fighters. Arafat, whose office in Amman had been evacuated, joined the fighters to defend the positions and helped to place barricades at the Maxim Roundabout (now called Firas Roundabout) in Jabal Al-Hussein.
