India, despite its Sanskrit heritage, was divided by a large multiplicity of languages. Moreover, although many Indian historians in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries challenged the theory of Oriental despotism, they too, like most Western writers of the same period, argued that history was fundamentally different from poetic imagination, and that this distinction was absent in India. 70 One may, of course, question whether such a clear distinction existed in the medieval Christian West or whether in an unqualified form it is still accepted by the many historical thinkers today who have come to question the possibility of objective history and who, like Hayden White, argue that every historical narrative is at core a work of poetic imagination.
